Sambal Jengkol: Amazing Dog Fruit Sambal
Welcome to another great sambal recipe! Sambal jengkol is a sambal that uses jengkol beans as its main ingredient. Making this sambal very exotic and also great in taste. Plus, it’s super easy to make!
To make sambal jengkol, simply grind together some chillies, garlic, onion and fried jengkol beans. Fry this paste to finish sambal jengkol, simple as that!

- 1 red onion
- 2 garlic cloves
- 80 g jengkol beans (fried)

What to consider when choosing the ingredients
For the best experience, ensure your ingredients are fresh. Look for vibrant chillies, crisp onions, and robust garlic. If using fresh jengkol beans, choose ones that are firm and free from weak spots.

Step 2: Chop and grind the ingredients
Chop the washed chillies and peeled onion and garlic roughly before adding them to your food grinder. Add the jengkol beans and save a few for later, grind everything into a paste.

Step 3: Fry sambal jengkol
Set a frying pan to medium heat and add some (sunflower) oil. Once hot, add the paste and fry for a couple of minutes. Stir frequently, you should be able to smell the sambal when it’s done.


Step 4: Serve and conserve sambal jengkol
Serve this sambal with many dishes, the large amount of jengkol make it a perfect dish on the side with some rice, or to add to many recipes. Sprinkle on some curries for an extra crunch! I recommend serving with the following:
