Sambal Ubi: an Excellent Sweet Potato Sambal

Welcome to another great sambal recipe! Sambal ubi, or sweet potato sambal, is a hearty, flavorful sambal that blends the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes with spicy and savory elements.

To make sambal ubi, simply boil or steam some sweet potato, mix with raw finely chopped chillies, garlic and spices and that’s it!

  • 1 tsp white pepper

What to consider when choosing the ingredients:

Step 2: Steam or boil the sweet potato

Cut the sweet potato in cubes of about a centimeter, you could first peel the potato but I decided to keep the nutritious skin in the recipe. Boil the potato pieces for about 20 minutes until tender, you should easily be able to mash the potato with a spoon.

Step 3: Chop and grind the other ingredients

Finely chop the washed red chilies and garlic. Grind together with salt and white pepper using a mortar and pestle.

Step 4: Serve and conserve sambal ubi

While the sweet potato is still hot, mix it with the ground paste in a bowl and you’re all set to go! The heat of the sweet potato will heat up the ground paste nicely.
